NGV Vehicle Cylinder Inspection

An NGV stores natural gas in specially constructed cylinders on the vehicle. To ensure the continued safe operation of the vehicle, the cylinders must be periodically inspected. It is the responsibility of the owner of the cylinder to ensure that cylinders are inspected regularly.

The inspection that the cylinder requires depends upon the manufacturer's specifications. Some cylinders require a visual inspection every three or five years. Some cylinders must be removed from the vehicle and hydrostatically tested every five years.

How do you know what type of cylinders you have?

Silver Coloured ID Plate

Your converted vehicle should have a silver coloured ID plate located under the hood. This plate will list the serial numbers of your cylinders. You can e-mail or phone the NGV department (toll free 1-888-648-4728) with the cylinder serial numbers and we will provide you with the type of cylinders that you have.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

If you can't find the silver ID plate, you can provide the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to Enbridge. The VIN is located on the lower driver's side of the windshield. It is a combination of numbers and letters that are essentially a serial number for your vehicle. Enbridge may have a record of your vehicle and be able to determine your type of cylinders.

Market Participants / Look-up Market Participant

Finally, you may go to one of Enbridge's Authorized Conversion Shops and have them identify the type of cylinder on the vehicle.

Safety is key

To ensure the continued safety of our customers and the welfare of the NGV industry, Enbridge has taken a proactive approach to ensure that cylinders are well maintained.

15-Year Cylinder

If you are an Enbridge customer who owns or rents a 15-year cylinder, we will replace this with a 5-year retest cylinder. This cylinder will provide you with a higher measure of safety. Since your cylinder is a 1992 or 1993, it cannot be used after 2007 or 2008. The 5-year cylinder needs to be retested every 5 years, but has a life of at least 30 years.

15-Year Cylinder

If you drive a Dodge van and are an Enbridge customer who owns a 5-year retest cylinder, we will have your cylinder hydrostatically tested for free. You only need to pay for the removal and replacement.
